I came to Robert, playing with a lot of tension and using too much effort. It was causing me many problems. He explained ways for me to sit and hold the instrument and use my muscles to produce sound with technique and energy. I could finally relax instead of having awful tension. I used to watch with admiration how some musicians played from memory. It looked so incredibly polished and the way things should be when one performs. But for so many years, when I tried to do it, I stumbled musically and was crippled by nerves. I had come to the conclusion “That’s just something I can’t do.” Robert took this fear from me, and showed me how to memorise – the steps I must go through, the proper way to do things so that my memory is now incredibly reliable. I can now play Bach suites in recital from memory, and really enjoy the freedom it brings. No inner voices telling me I’ll forget something, no stumbling along the way – just unrestricted and joyous music-making. Every time I play I think “Thank you Robert!” – he completely changed my playing.

I went to Robert not feeling confident that I could express strongly enough the feelings which I had about the music being a soloist in recitals or with orchestra. Robert started by showing me one of the most important things: how to get into an inner balance and calm while playing and he also explained to me how to be much more upright and stable even in the most demanding situations on stage. He really helped me a lot to open up myself and project my feelings.

Since seeing Robert, I have also found more space for my technique to develop and for my playing to become more and more natural and relaxed. I feel that now I can project my musical ideas to the audience with real confidence.

Robert diagnosed some little but important attitudes, movements that were obstructing a fluid performance and guided me to change them; results were immediately visible: all movements were nimble and natural; I was able to decide what kind of vibrato to use and above all I used less energy to play and I could concentrate on music and what I was doing.

And last but not the least, I'm now able to practice 3-4 hours before feeling tired. And to think, I used to work just one hour before feeling the same level of tiredness!

In addition to being enamoured of your extraordinary musicianship, I have long observed and admired the comfort and confidence you bring to your performances. How fitting that you should offer a path to others to help them achieve an approximation of your own relaxed and poised playing, all of which somehow is achieved without any compromise of energy or passion. As I read the description of Cello Clinic, my feeling was sign me up.
